Remember When…

Remember when the world held endless possibilities.
Remember when dreams could come true.
Remember when miracles happen.
Remember when we saw the word “pregnant” in a way we never had before.
Remember when we fell in love.
Remember when we felt blessed.
Remember when we felt safe.
Remember when we did everything right.

Remember when it all went so wrong.
Remember when we prayed like we had never prayed before.
Remember when we believed it would all be ok.
Remember when our hearts shattered.
Remember when we fought harder than we ever had before.
Remember when we were so strong and so weak all at once.
Remember when we chose life.
Remember when we chose love.remember when

Remember when everything happened so fast.
Remember when our miracle was born.
Remember when love was enough.
Remember when beautiful wasn’t enough to describe.
Remember when someone so tiny meant so much.
Remember when heaven kissed earth.
Remember when we held an angel.
Remember when we gave him back.

Remember when the world stopped.
Remember when the night fell and there was only darkness.
Remember when all hope was lost.
Remember when death won.

Remember when friends stayed.
Remember when friends left.
Remember when we built walls.
Remember when the loneliness set in.
Remember when the grief swallowed us whole.

Remember when careless words were spoken.
Remember when people forgot.
Remember when we were betrayed.
Remember when we built higher walls.
Remember when our lives stood still, and the world still spun.
Remember when everything was grey.
Remember when joy seemed gone forever.

Remember when we became stronger.
Remember when we fought to stand on our own two feet.
Remember when the fog lifted.
Remember when the pain was unbearable.
Remember when we were crippled by fear.
Remember when we began to walk.
Remember when we hoped during the heartache.
Remember when we kept moving forward when we wanted to crawl in a hole.

Remember when we carried each other.
Remember when we saw color again.
Remember when our new life began.
Remember when we redefined “normal”.
Remember when no one understood.
Remember when we fought to protect our hearts.
Remember when took care of ourselves.
Remember when we allowed ourselves to grieve in any way necessary.
Remember when we found ourselves again, battered and broken, but still alive.
Remember when we wanted to die.
Remember when we chose to live.

Their son, Cyrus, was diagnosed with a rare fatal birth defect at their 12 week ultrasound. They chose to fight for his life and to carry him with love for as long as they could. He was born on November 25, 2013 at 33 weeks and lived for a precious 1 hour and 9 minutes. They are heartbroken that he is gone but thankful for his life and know that he will never be forgotten. He is their only child. Now Alex chooses to write openly and honestly about her grieving process and hopes that her words will help others feel less alone. She created and writes at Hope in the Heartache, and is a writer for All That Love Can Do.
