Honoring My Motherhood

Heather-mothersdaypost

This is my second Mother’s Day with no living children. I’m still learning and adjusting to this unwelcomed reality. But if there’s one thing about Mother’s Day I want you to know, it’s don’t be afraid to truly recognize yourself as a mother and enjoy this day as much as you can. You deserve to be acknowledged and have a nice day just like mothers with living children. It won’t be easy; because the fact remains that our children aren’t here with us. But we are mothers too and Mother’s Day is for us too.

If you’re ok with being asked about children and seeing mothers with their living children (I personally am):

  • Get a Mani/Pedi
  • Have a Spa Day
  • Enjoy a Brunch
  • A Day at the Zoo
  • Picnic in the Park
  • A Day of Shopping
  • Go Out for Ice Cream

If you’re not ok with being asked about children and seeing mothers with their living children:

  • Breakfast in Bed
  • Go for a Short Walk
  • Take-out and a Movie Rental
  • Plant a Small Garden
  • Cook a Nice Dinner at Home
  • Indulge in Your Favorite Dessert
  • Spend the Day in Your Pajamas

Some other ways to honor your motherhood on Mother’s Day:

  • Write a Letter to Your Baby(ies)
  • Look at the Pictures/Videos You Have
  • Go Through the Special Mementos You have in Memory of Your Baby(ies)
  • Visit You Baby’s Resting Place
  • Acknowledge and Say Out Loud, “I Am a Mother.”

Regardless of what you choose to do, or not do, to honor your own motherhood, please know YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL MOTHER. There is no right or wrong way to recognize Mother’s Day, because it’s our day.

I would love to hear what you have done and/or plan to do on Mother’s Day.  Please share by leaving a comment below.

I’m thinking of and praying for each of you as you navigate this Mother’s Day.
